Just as we start a new week of hosting 4 homeless families at Oxford Second, a new hymn has been released to honor them. O God, You Give Welcome was recently written especially for Family Promise by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette. In addition to being a renowned hymn writer whose works have been performed around the world, Carolyn is also co-pastor of Limestone Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware, also a Family Promise host congregation. The hymn was created as a prayer for congregations, offering a blessing upon the homeless parents and children they serve as well as the houses of worship that provide shelter. A YouTube video slideshow has also been created, with the hymn performed by The Masterwork Camerata choral group. Music and lyrics are available for download here. O God, You Give Welcome is the second musical offering created for Family Promise within the past year. Last summer, Ken Medema wrote a theme song, Home Again, as the title track on a CD he created specifically for Family Promise. But the two songs serve different purposes. The Family Promise Hymn, O God, You Give Welcome, was created for congregations to sing at the start of host week. It's meant to inspire, as a congregation prepares to provide shelter and comfort to families in need, and also to raise awareness about the program. The Family Promise Theme Song, Home Again, is celebratory in nature, and perfect for Affiliates to sing at concerts, fundraisers and volunteer recognition events. The entire CD, along with sheet music, is available at the Family Promise online store. |
