The Power of Love

It's hard to believe as we read this opening passage in the first chapter of Philippians that Paul can sound so happy, so at peace, so filled with love. Especially when we are reminded that he is imprisoned - writing while living under circumstances most of us would consider horrific.

And what is his secret -- this man who once was angry and violently condemned Christians? His power comes out of love. Knowing God's love, and being committed to sharing that love, wherever he is, whatever the circumstances. And he prays this prayer for the Philippians:

So this is my prayer: that your love will flourish and that you will not only love much but well. Learn to love appropriately. You need to use your head and test your feelings so that your love is sincere and intelligent, not sentimental gush. Live a lover’s life, circumspect and exemplary, a life Jesus will be proud of: bountiful in fruits from the soul, making Jesus Christ attractive to all, getting everyone involved in the glory and praise of God. (Peterson's "The Message")

May it be a prayer for us as well.
