They can come out of nowhere...one moment it's smooth sailing, and then out of nowhere, a big storm blows in. And we're not just talking weather. Storms take many forms, and can turn our lives upside down in an instant. If we let it. In this story, Jesus suggests to his disciples that they all sail across to the other side. They settle in, and Jesus falls asleep. They are fishermen. They know how to sail, and they are surely not strangers to storms. But when this one hits, they are terrified - especially when Jesus is peacefully still asleep. Why isn't he awake? Why isn't he helping them paddle? So many whys...and we've had them, too, in the midst of our own storms. Jesus hasn't abandoned them or forgotten them. Far from it. But his response is nothing like what they expected. And his wisdom, if followed, can help us weather our own storms. |
